Symptoms that often start after you have stopped drinking. Symptoms develop in three stages. Stage One: begins a few hours after your last drink and can last for two to three days. Symptoms include: - shaking; - irritability; - nausea and vomiting; or - difficulty sleeping. Stage Two: Symptoms begin 24 to 48 hours after long-term heavy drinking stops. Symptoms include convulsions. Stage Three: The most serious stage. Symptoms begin four or five days after long-term heavy drinking stops and include: - being severely agitated; - being extremely confused and disoriented; - dilated pupils, fever, and a very rapid heart rate; or - delirium tremens.
