| Alcohol is a drug. The term alcohol
is used to refer to alcoholic beverages. It is a
colourless liquid that is the result of a natural process called
fermentation. Fermentation is
the process of sugar being changed into alcohol. The kind of alcohol used
in drinks is called ethanol or ethyl
alcohol.
Two drinks made from yeast fermentation are beer and wine and they contain small amounts of pure alcohol (4% to 15%). More concentrated alcoholic drinks such as gin, rum, vodka or rye are called spirits or hard liquor. These contain about 40% pure alcohol. Pure, undiluted alcohol is never used to drink. |
